Nursing
Adult Nursing Practice Setting
Introduction
It is always important for the nurses to make sure that they will be able to serve patients to their expectations, will be able to follow the nursing code of conduct, and subsequently assist the healthcare organization to achieve their objectives (Amina & Malikb, 2019).
However, for this purpose, the nurses need to upgrade their skills and overcome the challenges of the workplace environment. The given report will provide a personal reflection of my skills related to nursing and will even highlight an incident where I took care of the patient suffering from heart disease.
Description
To describe about the situation where I provided treatment to the patient suffering from heart disease, I shall be using Gibbs' Reflective Cycle. It comprises of five major phases that include - describe, feelings, evaluation, analysis, and conclusion (Gibbs, 1988).
In a given scenario, I was providing treatment to a patient who was a lady suffering from heart disease since last five years. Her age was 65 years old and hence required personal attention. She was even required to have medications on time; it would then ensure that her heart-beats remained in controlled state.
The physician then directed me to follow certain other instructions including medical counselling. It thus allowed me to have a direct conversation with the patient so that I can motivated her and assist her from overcoming the negative consequences of the given heart disease.
My feelings, thoughts, and emotions
While working in this given situation, I identified that I am required to gather all the medical resources, follow the instructions provided to them, channelize communication, and take effective decisions in given timeframe. Only then it will make sure that the patients will be served in a better way and on the other hand will even allow me to serve on the given objectives of the healthcare organization (Abdullah et al., 2018).
Further, I need to even follow the principles of honesty, transparency, open communication, integrity, and code of ethics while working in a given healthcare setting (Baker, 2017). Besides, I even need to have control over my emotions and follow certain principles so that I can serve better to the patients. I need to listen to the patient every time and provide her with all the comforts. It would thus regain her confidence and she will be motivated to live a normal life.
I also need to respect her socio-cultural values and provide all types of support that she will be looking out for in a given environment. I even need to manage her anxiety and stress levels so that she will be able to overcome those aspects during the entire treatment process.
I need to work on the principles of developing trust with the patient, follow relevant protocols while delivering services, and uphold my position as a registered nurse in the organization. I need to act with honesty and demonstrate my service approach based on evidence-based practices.
I further need to cooperate with all the audits of the organization and even inform the regulatory team about the work approaches that I have taken for the purpose of curing the given patient. While continuing my work approach, I need to learn skills related to leadership and management so that I can set my priorities accordingly. I shall then even be able to use the resources wisely and even guide my rest of working staff in the right direction. They will then be able to work and perform better and provide desired care services to the patient in a given situation.
It is more important for me to even monitor my overall performance from time to time as that will allow me to bridge the operational loopholes from a holistic perspective and subsequently will allow me to serve better in a given working scenario (NMC, 2018).
Evaluation of the incident
Based on the given incident, I recognize that one needs to apply the theoretical models of nursing and also evidence-based practices while dealing with such patients in a given environment. It will thus make sure that the patient will be able to get all the desired level of comfort and patient-centered care in a given healthcare organization (Bono-Neri, 2019).
In addition, I need to pay focus more on the principles of well-being and act in the best interests of the patients. I was even required to listen to the family members of this patient. They informed me about her traits, characteristics, and some of the other problems that she faced in her day-to-day routine. I then modified my treatment approach and thus ensured that she will be able to receive the best quality treatment care.
Moreover, I even respected her right to privacy and confidentiality. It is always important for me to not disclose any information about the patient to any of the internal or external resources, unless informed to me by the senior management (Bvumbwe, 2016). I need to practice more on evidence-based work approaches so that I shall be able to perform better and serve well to the given needs of the patients in a given operational environment.
Analysis of the incident
This hands-on experience with the patient provided me some of the important learning. First, I need to communicate clearly with both patients and other healthcare staff members in a given working environment. I need to use terms that patient and her family members will be able to understand in a given situation.
Third, I need to follow principles of team-based working approach and thus establish proper collaboration with rest of the working staff in the organization (Chen et al., 2016). I need to respect the skills and expertise of the concerned physician who will be looking after the health of this patient. I then need to follow her instructions so that I can provide medications as per the prescribed time and also counsel the patient as and when required.
I need to keep clear and accurate records of the patient so that there will be no breach within it and instead will assist the physician to take better decisions in the interest of the patient. Finally, I need to remain accountable for the actions that I have taken and for the decisions that I have made related to this patient. Only then I shall be able to adhere with the given standards of practice in the field of nursing and promote professionalism at the workplace (Leigh & Roberts, 2018).
I even need to seek opinions about my care approach from the family members of the patient. Additionally, I need to gather more information about the patient from them. These aspects will then allow me to determine whether I need to change my treatment approach in a given scenario or not. If yes, I need to modify few of the care approaches and thus ensure that a better approach will be taken. The patient will be then more satisfied through this approach and subsequently will even allow her to get recovered from the given situation in the near future.
Conclusion
It will be always important for me to focus on my key working strengths, overcome my operational weaknesses, and capture the right working opportunities in the organization. It will then allow me to use the learned theoretical models of nursing, will even allow me to use evidence-based practices, and finally, make sure that I shall be able to serve better to the given patients. Furthermore, I need to improve on my communication skills, pronounce all the words clearly, and even take some of the important opportunities related to working with patient.
Besides, I even need to follow Covid-19 guidelines in the present pandemic time and ensure of providing superior quality work services amid the given situation. I need to deploy patient-centered care approach and even follow the code of conduct while operating in a given working environment. Only then I shall be able to achieve desired objectives and ensure of recovering the health of given patient in a given clinical setting.
Action Planning
For any given nurse, it will be important to follow the guidelines of the organization, utilize their working strengths, and take steps through which they will be able to deliver better quality care services amid the given working environment. The role of the nursing staff is always vital in providing care to the patients as they need to follow the instructions of the concerned physician.
In this case scenario, I need to check for the heart pulse, record all the observations, maintain the log of the patient, and even record other observations. I shall then need to follow the NMC code of conduct and inform the physician about the current state of the patient and the progress made after treatment approaches are undertaken.
I even need to counsel the patient from time to time and thus make sure of motivating their feelings and emotions; it will then allow them to improve on their conditions and they will be able to recover soon from the given diseased condition. I need to review my performance and even make sure of overcoming key weaknesses at the workplace. This shall then allow me to deliver better performance amid the given working environment.
